RIP Patrick Swayze

September 15, 2009

It was one of those deaths that I knew was coming, yet when I heard the news last night that Patrick Swayze had, at long last, lost his battle with cancer, I was still shocked. And unexpectedly sad.

No, I didn’t know Patrick Swayze, personally. But, I knew Patrick Swayze through his movies.

So many of his movies evoke so many great memories throughout my life, ones I’ll have with me forever, and the news of his death almost felt like an old friend had died. Someone who maybe I didn’t talk to that often, but I always knew was there to put a smile on my face and lift my spirits a little when I needed someone to make me laugh.

OK, maybe that’s a little dramatic. But in a way, it’s true.

Like, the first time my mom saw the movie “Ghost”. Her crush on Patrick Swayze reached new depths that night. She still talks about it, to this day. And, really, who will ever look at a pottery wheel the same way again?

Or the infamous scene in Dirty Dancing. Yeah, you know exactly which one I’m talking about.

And the Chippendale Dancers. Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze. Need I say more?

(The quality isn’t the best, but it’s still hilarious)

So, my heart goes out to Patrick Swayze’s wife, family, and friends. So many of his movies touched so many aspects of my life, and it’s sad to think there won’t be anymore to create new memories.

So, no, I didn’t know him personally, but I still feel like he was a part of my life.

RIP Patrick Swayze.
